The Nobel Peace Prize.

Korea has one laureate, the late President Kim Dae-Jung, in recognition for paving the way for the unification of North and South Korea.

Though controversial, President Obama of the US also received the award in 2009.

Mahatma Gandhi of India is said to have been nominated 5 times for the award.

As you know, the Nobel Peace Prize honors those around the world who made meaningful contributions to peace.

Well, now an award is also being established here in Korea, which was modeled after the Nobel Peace Prize.

It’s called the SUNHAK Peace Prize.

The name is a bit unfamiliar.

Let’s take some time to go over the related information.

<SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee>

We have Secretary General Dr. Man-Ho Kim on the line.

Secretary General Dr. Man-Ho Kim!

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yes, this is Man-Ho Kim.

<Anchor>

First of all, the SUNHAK Peace Prize is still relatively new and unfamiliar to us.

Mr. Secretary General, can you start off by telling our viewers about what exactly the SUNHAK Peace Prize is?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

The SUNHAK Peace Prize was created on a global scale by Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon, to honor individuals and organizations that made notable contributions for a peaceful world and human welfare.

Our goal is to use the SUNHAK Peace Prize to expand the culture of peace to the world.

<Anchor>

But wait a minute Mr. Secretary General.

Isn’t Rev. Sun Myung Moon the founder of the Unification Church?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yes, that is correct.

<Anchor>

Didn’t Rev. Sun Myung Moon pass away 2 years ago?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yes, you are right.

<Anchor>

Then I’d like to ask you this question.

Nobel amassed his lifetime wealth through the weapons industry, and as a way of giving back to society, he created the Nobel Prize, and one of its categories was the Nobel Peace Prize.

In the same sense, there had to have been a reason behind creating the SUNHAK Peace Prize in the late Rev. Moon’s name, so would you be able to give us any information about that?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

If you look back at the life of Rev. Moon, you cannot leave out his relationship with North Korea.

In his lifetime, he promoted a wide range of businesses with the North, and the ties he was able to establish with Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are remarkable.

<Anchor>

Mr. Secretary General.

Other than the various businesses with the North, in my research I found that he even visited the North in 1991; does that mean that he met with Kim Il-Sung well before President Kim Dae-Jung did?

Was all this done under the approval of the Korean government?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yes, it was done with our government’s approval and support.

In particular, the Korean government has even acknowledged that Rev. Moon’s visit to the North in 1991 and his talks with Kim Il-Sung, contributed to the realization of the North-South summit, reunion of separated families, and the commercial development of Mt. Kumkang.

<Anchor>

Please go on.

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Later, Rev. Sun Myung Moon also made significant contributions to civilian cultural exchange with the North, as the Little Angels Children’s Folk Ballet which Rev. Sun Myung Moon founded, visited the North for cultural exchange, followed by the Pyongyang Children and Students Performing Arts Troupe returning the favor visiting the South for their performance.

Furthermore, as part of the North and South Korea economic cooperation project, he has organized the Pyeonghwa Motors, the Pothonggang Hotel in Pyongyang, etc. to improve and stabilize the North-South relations, and strive for peace.

<Anchor>

Mr. Secretary General, my research showed that the Tongil Group passed on all businesses it had with the North, such as Pyeonghwa Motors, to the North Korean government.  If this is true, are there any other projects for coalition with the North still in operation?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

During his life, Rev. Moon always emphasized that aside from profit interests, the North-South cooperation business projects were there to help the North transition into an open economy in the international community, and that we should always head in the direction that would help contribute to North-South unification.

Therefore currently, though some commercial businesses have been handed over to the North Korean government, we have continuously kept running not-for-profit projects such as the Peace Center in Pyeongyang.

Thus, the purpose of the North Korea projects was not to gain profit, but to contribute to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to advance efforts for unification.

<Anchor>

I see.  I didn’t know that.

Actually, I always thought that the person who pioneered the North Korea cooperative initiatives from the private sector was the late Chairman Ju-Yung Chung (founder of Hyundai Motors), but now I see that the Tongil Group had already been actively engaged in North Korean cooperative projects long before that.

Hyundai Group Chairman Ju-Yung Chung’s 1999 visit to the North still has a lasting impression on me, so I mentioned it briefly.

Now, Mr. Secretary General, could you please give us your thoughts on this?

There are so many peace awards out there, whether it be the Nobel Peace Prize or the Seoul Peace Prize.

Can you give us any distinct aspects about the SUNHAK Peace Prize that differentiate it from other peace prizes?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yes, of course.

Above all, the SUNHAK Peace Prize is a peace prize that transcends race, nation, and religion, and selects its laureate purely from a general civilian’s standpoint, without any political interests.

Also, as an award with international implications, I find it especially meaningful that it is presented in Seoul, the capital of Korea, a symbol of division and conflict for the last half-century as the only country in the world still divided, I expect it to assist in promoting peace not only in the Korean peninsula, but also throughout the world.

Furthermore, our work will not end when the award is presented, but will make effort to continually support the laureates’ peace activities, and form an international network for peace.
-----
<Anchor>

You talked about this peace prize being one of international proportions, but how much is the awarded prize money?

<Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

The prize money is $1 million dollars USD, equivalent to about 1 billion Korean won.

< Anchor >

Compared to the Nobel Prize’s 800 krone, about 1.4 billion in Korean Won, it would be hard to say that this is a small amount.

How do you select the laureate?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Ah yes, thank you and thank you to everyone who has already shown so much interest in our award.

We will try to keep the laureate selection process as transparent as possible, but for now I will just like to give you a quick overview.

First of all, 1,000 nomination committee members from over 100 countries around the world will send us their recommendations for candidates.

Then, through local research groups, we will examine their candidacy, and after a panel of expert advisers will narrow the candidates by a divisible of 3, the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee will do a final review and select the laureate.

< Anchor >

Listening to your explanation, it seems that the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee has a large responsibility in selecting the laureate.

Who are the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee members comprised of?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

As the SUNHAK Peace Prize is an international award, the Committee also is comprised of international personnel, all experts in their respective fields.

Dr. Il-Sik Hong former Chancellor of Korea University has been commissioned as the first Committee Chairman. The committee consists of 12 total members including foreign members such as Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali former UN Secretary General, and Korean members such as Venerable Seong-Ta Chief Monk of Bolguksa Temple Jogye Order, and Dr. Tae-Ik Chung President of the Korean Council on Foreign Relations, among others.

< Anchor >

Okay lastly, going forward could you briefly go over your plans and schedule for the SUNHAK Peace Prize?

< Dr. Man-Ho Kim Secretary General / SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee >

Yesterday Aug. 11th, the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee held its official inauguration ceremony at the Seoul Press Center.

We will take candidate nominations until the end of October, and set next year April–May as our goal for selecting the laureate, followed by the first SUNHAK Peace Prize Ceremony to be held in late August 2015.

The SUNHAK Peace Prize Ceremony will position itself as a global peace award held in Korea, and hope that it will also contribute to the peace and unification on the Korean peninsula.

Particularly, we promise to do our best to act in accordance with the vision for peace outlined in the SUNHAK Peace Prize central motto of ‘one global family’, and also would like to ask for the interest and encouragement of the general public.

< Anchor >

I see.

Everybody knows that President Park Geun-Hye’s statements regarding ‘Unification is a jackpot, and the success of the Dresden Declaration’ are all possible only on the foundation of peace between North and South Korea.

I don’t think I am the only one who hopes that the SUNHAK Peace Prize will become the cornerstone for North-South future unification.

This has been an interview with the SUNHAK Peace Prize Secretary General Man-Ho Kim.

SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Inauguration Ceremony - Commemorative Address

SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Inauguration Ceremony - Commemorative Address

Hello.  This is the SUNHAK Peace Prize blog, the ‘prize for all peace loving global citizens.’

In this posting, we'd like to share with you the Commemorative Address given by Dr. Il-Sik Hong, former Chancellor of Korea University, and SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Chairman.

Commemorative Address

Dr. Il-Sik Hong, former Chancellor of Korea University, Chairman of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee

His Excellency Xanana Gusmao, Prime Minister of East Timor, came all the way here to grace the occasion with his presence. Dr. Cheol-Seung Lee, Chairman of the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation, members of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee, ladies and gentlemen. It is my pleasure to welcome you on this very special occasion, and I would like to thank all of you for attending this historical ceremony despite your busy schedules.

I believe that you already know well that the SUNHAK Peace Prize was established by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the wife of the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon who we all respect so much, in order to continue his thought and legacy. As the first chairman of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee I would like to use this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon, and also pass on the warm greetings of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon to you all.

Since the 19th century the history of human civilization has developed where the East has been more influenced by the western powers. But now that age is coming to a close and a new age of great transition is upon us where the East is now influencing the West. The age of economic sovereignty and technological sovereignty of the post-industrial society has passed, and we have entered the age of the knowledge information society where a high-level of specialization is needed. Today all of humankind long for a new value system. Then what can the value system that will be able to lead the future of human civilization be?

 I say that the only answer will be the opening of the age of peace and love that all of humankind so desire.

I believe that in the age of the great transition of human civilization, Korea is at the center of this, and that we Koreans are standing in a position of leadership.

From long ago the humanitarian ideal of "Hongik Ingan, Ewha Segye" namely trying to benefit all people and lead them based on the truth is our Korean traditional thought, and part of our rich eastern culture. Not only that in each age in Korea the universal thought and culture was readily accepted by the Korean people. For example in the age of Buddhism we readily accepted and developed Buddhist ideals, in the age of Confucianism we readily accepted and developed Confucian ideals, and in the age of Christianity we accepted Christian culture too adding to it the idea that we all have to live and prosper together in peace.

From long ago the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon understood well the specialities of the history of civilization, and he unified Christian theology and Korean traditional thought and made a new ideology of peace. He gave us the vision as to the way we must go forward. The idea that the whole of humankind is one family, and that we are all brothers and sisters that must co-exist and prosper together, can be found in Rev. Moon's Divine Principle and Unification Thought.

I am a person who believes that God, humankind and nature have to become one and that we have to realize the ideal family based on true love. And I was deeply moved by the teachings of Rev. Moon namely "Love Heaven · Love Humankind · Love Your Country."

All of us here today long for the eternal peace of humankind. And I would like to pledge that the SUNHAK Peace Prize committee members will march forward with the philosophy of peace that teaches that all of humankind are one family, and we will do our best to realize a world of true love that transcends race, religion, and national boundaries. We accept the noble will of the founders Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon who have put this ideology into practice and encouraged us to become "Peace-Loving Global Citizens," and we will find and support people who are dedicating their lives to building a world of peace. In addition we determine to band together with the various different organizations in the world that are working for peace and become the peace tow truck to help humankind realize the one global family ideal.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen!

I would like to thank you all, especially those of you who have come from abroad, for attending the inauguration ceremony of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee.

In closing, I would like to say that I think that it is especially meaningful that the SUNHAK Peace Prize will be awarded in the Korean Peninsula, the only nation in the world that is still divided. And I would like to end my speech by praying that in the future, Korea will become the Mecca of peace and that the SUNHAK Peace Prize will become a message of peace and true love that spreads from Korea throughout the world.

Thank you very much.

SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Inauguration Ceremony - Congratulatory Address

SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Inauguration Ceremony - Congratulatory Address

Hello.  This is the SUNHAK Peace Prize blog, the ‘prize for all peace loving global citizens.’

In this posting, we'd like to share with you the second congratulational address given by Dr. Cheol-Seung Lee Chairman of the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation, during the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee inauguration ceremony, held at the Korea Press Center on Aug. 11th, 2014.

Dr. Cheol-Seung Lee was very active as a student activist, politician, and civil society spectacle organizer, and had a deep impact in Korea's social welfare.

Congratulatory Address

Dr. Cheol Seung Lee - Chairman of the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation

Distinguished guests from around the world, ladies and gentlemen, I am very happy to see you today.  Today on the 2nd anniversary of the ascension of Rev. Sun Myung Moon I would like to offer my congratulations on the inauguration ceremony of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee.  It gives me great pleasure to be able to offer the congratulatory address on this very meaningful occasion.

As a person who has led the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation for many years, this inauguration ceremony of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee deeply moves my heart in a new way.  As you all know well, it has been two years now since the ascension of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, and there are still many people in the world who do not know about his life and values.  Even today, there are still people who think of him with religious prejudice and racial stereotypes.  They know him to be just the founder of a new religious movement in Korea.

However, despite endless persecution and criticism, Rev. Sun Myung Moon offered his whole life loving humankind with a firm resolution in order to realize world peace, and the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsular.  He was born in Korea in 1920 during the time of the Japanese occupation, and even though he was imprisoned on several occasions by the Japanese, the communist North, and even by the American government, he never stopped working for world peace.

In his life, he initiated memorials to celebrate the righteous acts of the patriot, Ahn Joong-Gun, and other patriots of the independence movement, and in 1990 at the height of the Cold War, he met President Gorbachev of the Soviet Union, to encourage him to work for world peace.  The next year in 1991, he even went to Pyeong Yang to meet Premier Kim Il-Sung of North Korea, with the message that peace can only be realized with God at the center.  I and others alike were moved by his courage.  We cannot but bow our heads in respect at the depth of the ideology and thought of Rev. Moon.  We were all moved at the courage he showed when without any regard for his own safety, he met the leaders of the enemy camp in order to achieve world peace.  Unless he was a true saint and holy man, loving his enemies in this way would be impossible.

My fellow citizens of the world,I am very grateful that even though Rev. Sun Myung Moon has ascended, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, has continued her husband's legacy in working for world peace and established the SUNHAK Peace Prize.  I fervently hope that the SUNAHK Peace Prize can be a driving force to enhance and develop the spirit of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

And I also hope that the warm and noble love of the Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon can be with you, and that you will all take part in this world-wide peace movement.  I hope that this meeting here today can be the great starting point for world peace so that when the SUNHAK Peace Prize is awarded for the first time next year in 2015, a festival of peace can take place on the Korean Peninsula.

I believe that the Chairman of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee, Dr. Hong Il-Sik, who is well respected in the scholarly world will add even more prestige to this peace prize.  I would like to end my congratulatory address by once again showing my appreciation to Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon who established this peace prize as a legacy commemorating her husband, Rev. Sun Myung Moon's desire for world peace, and also by praying for the continued development of Chairman Hong and all the other members of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee.

Thank you very much.

SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee Inauguration Ceremony - Congratulatory Address

Hello.  This is the SUNHAK Peace Prize blog, the ‘prize for all peace loving global citizens.’

In this posting, we'd like to share with you the first congratulatory address given by His Excellency Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, during the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee inauguration ceremony on August 11th, 2014, at the Korea Press Center.

H.E. Xanana Gusmao is an iconic figure of East Timor's independence movement, and was elected as the first President of East Timor through the first ever Presidential election held in East Timor.  He was also re-elected in 2007 and 2012.

He also won the 1999 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights in 2000.

Congratulatory Address

H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao
Prime Minister of Timor-Leste

Esteemed Chairman of the SUNHAK Peace Prize Committee, Dr. Il-Sik Hong, committee members, distinguished guests from Korea, and around the world.  I want to offer my sincere congratulations on the establishment of the SUNHAK Peace Prize.  I am truly honored and happy by your invitation for me to deliver the congratulatory address today.

Ladies and gentlemen, today, I’m sure, we are all remembering Father Moon and wish he were here with us to attend this inauguration ceremony.  He loved peace so much. The title of his autobiography was, “As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen.” Throughout his life Father Moon championed the vision of a peaceful world.

He taught that there were two basic principles of peace. The first principle was a motto that he lived his life by, “Live for the Sake of Others.” The second principle was his vision of the world as, “One Family under God.”
In essence, Father Moon saw public-mindedness and family values as the pillars and beams for building world peace.
Equally important, the contrary is also true. Selfishness and immorality are the enemies of peace.

I believe it was Father Moon’s passionate love for God and humankind that were central to his vision for peace.  And, he shared this dream most intimately with his lovely wife and lifetime partner, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.  It is their unbreakable love and her desire to carry on Father Moon’s legacy of peace that is at the heart of the SUNHAK Peace Prize.  And this is why we are here today.

In essence, the message that this SUNHAK Peace Prize should carry is this: by living unselfish and altruistic lives, we can build families and communities of peace.  And by transcending religion, race, nationality and culture we can build nations and a world of peace.  With this message, the SUNHAK Peace Prize will serve as a beacon of hope, guiding us all towards a culture of peace.

Lastly, I would like to honor Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and her late husband, Rev. Moon, who have invested all of their effort to realization of a peaceful world.  In closing, I would like to express once again my sincere gratitude for allowing me to offer this congratulatory address at the establishment of the SUNHAK Peace Prize. Korea was and continues to be an inspiration of strength to developed countries to many least developed countries.  Now an inspiration for all conflict afflicted countries, I hope it will help them surpass the difficult times they faced.

I pray that your families and nations may be blessed with peace and prosperity.

Thank you very much.

SUNHAK Peace Prize Founder Introduction

SUNHAK Peace Prize Founder Introduction

Hello.  This blog is about the SUNHAK Peace Prize, the ‘prize for all peace loving global citizens.’
In this posting, we'd like to introduce to you the founder who created the SUNHAK Peace Prize.

In his autobiography, the founder explains, "I am a controversial person.  The mere mention of my name causes trouble in the world.  I never sought money or fame but have spent my life speaking only of peace.  The world, though has associated many different phrases with my name, rejected me, and thrown stones at me.  Many are not interested in knowing what I say or what I do.  They only oppose me."

Would you be curious as to who the founder of the SUNHAK Peace Prize might be?  Well, now we'll let you know.

Rev. Sun Myung Moon (1920~2012, born in Jeong-ju, North Pyeong-an Province)
Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon (1943~Present, born in An-ju, South Pyeong-an Province)

“I have dedicated my entire life to creating a world of peace. Peace means to connect people of different ways of thinking, different races, and different languages. When I ate food, I ate for the sake of world peace; and when I drank water, I drank for the sake of world peace. At times, steep mountains and large oceans blocked my way, but I kept running holding high the banner of peace – up steep mountains and across the seas, with no regard for day or night. It has not been easy to live for the sake of peace, but this was the only thing that could bring me happiness.”

 - from : "As a Peace - Loving Global Citizen"
 - by : Rev. Sun Myung Moon

Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the True Parents, True Teachers and True Owners, lived their lives for the realization of 'world peace through ideal families.'  They toured the world, transcending nationality, race, religion and culture, proclaimed 'one global family' as their vision of peace, and centering on religion, made great efforts to realize peace through various fields such as politics, economy, education, media, arts, family, women’s rights and youth, etc.

Purpose Behind the SUNHAK Peace Prize

The SUNHAK Peace Prize was founded by Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the wife of the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon.  This award reflects her profound hope of continuing the legacy left by her husband, who lived his life with the spirit of “having the heart of a parent, in the body of a servant, shedding sweat for the earth, tears for humankind and blood for heaven,” dedicating his entire life toward realizing interdependence, mutual prosperity, and universally shared values, where humankind thrives as “One Family Under God.”

The peaceful world envisioned by humankind can only be built upon an all-encompassing foundation where peace among nations exists politically, militarily and religiously, and is realized by protecting family values, the sanctity of marriage, and the value of filial piety through the maturity of human character. Reconciliation, coexistence and cooperation between diverse groups of people, representing differing social values and interests, as well as preservation and good management of the environment, are all key ingredients for the world of peace envisioned by Rev. and Mrs. Moon.

Indeed, peace is the highest and ultimate value and desire that has been sought ceaselessly by humankind throughout history. This noble ideal demands the dedication and sacrifice of many righteous and capable individuals.

Through founding the SUNHAK Peace Prize, we wish to recognize individuals, who have willingly sacrificed themselves for peace, and praise them for their works, thereby lighting the beacon of hope that will shine upon each and every person on earth who yearns for world peace.

The award ceremony for the SUNHAK Peace Prize will be held annually in Seoul, Korea, in order to honor, inherit and perpetuate the grand legacy of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
